Basic English Self-Placement Instrument (BESPI) Beginning August 10, 2020, Miami Dade College is administering the Basic English Self-Placement Instrument (BESPI) to prospective EAP students with limited English proficiency for placement in designated English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses. The BESPI was developed by Miami Dade College as a temporary measure to address the technology issues some prospective students are experiencing during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The BESPI is a self-assessment combined with a few English ability questions to help determine placement in EAP classes. The BESPI includes the information below. It is untimed, and it only takes a few minutes to complete all the questions.

- Level 1 - True beginner: No English
- Level 2 - Beginner: A little English. I can already communicate basic needs and personal information.
- Level 3 - Low Intermediate: Some English. I can already communicate about familiar topics in English with some fluency, but many mistakes.
- Level 4 - Intermediate: Good English. I can communicate in English, but still need time to think about words and grammar. I am still making mistakes.
- Level 5 - High Intermediate: Good English: I can communicate more spontaneously in English. I am still learning, but I am feeling more confident. I may be ready to take some regular college classes with English speaking professors and classmates.
- Level 6 - Low Advanced: Very Good English: I feel ready to participate in regular college classes with English speaking professors and classmates. I need to improve and refine my English and increase my vocabulary.
- Exempt - Excellent English: I feel ready for college classes, including ENC 1101, English Composition. I want to take a test for Reading and Writing to see if I can become exempt from EAP.
- Prospective students complete an initial Self-Assessment of English Proficiency Level.
- Prospective students who self-assess Level 1 or 2 are immediately routed to the Advisor Contacts section.
- Prospective students who self-assess as Levels 3-6 or Exempt are routed to complete the Background Information section before being routed to the Advisor Contact section.

There are three ways for students to qualify for the ACCUPLACER NG test:
- After level 4 and up of EAP classes completed
- After taking the ACCUPLACESL and scoring 97+ eWrite 4
- BESPI new rules are L7 Grammar 18-20
